Community
Much of the work of Cheddar Vale Lions is for the community of the Cheddar Valley. Each year there are many events which are aimed at serving the community, whether organising the Annual Tea Party for the more elderly, assisted Christmas Shopping and being served with Sherry & Mince Pies or Tree of Light. We work alongside the local schools, encourage them to participate in Young Leaders in Service Awards, assist with reading and invite them to share in World Sight Day. This has been very rewarding and the Club hope to continue serving this way in the future. All these events would not be possible without the support of the public at our fundraising events.
The Club supplied the hoist at the Kings of Wessex Leisure Centre swimming pool , an essential piece of equipment enabling those with specific needs to get in and out of the pool, as well as providing disabled access ramps at local schools. At Cheddar First School we built the wildlife pond, encouraging the young people of today to learn about habitat and creatures of pond life. Members have even assembled 'flat pack' furniture, undertaken gardening and fitted smoke detection alarms etc for those not physically fit or able to do so for themselves.
We supplied and installed a lifesaving Defibrillator outside the Riverside Inn courtesy of the landlord Hugh available in any emergency. The Club are continuing to raise sufficient funds to provide even more in the future.
All these projects cost money and we rely on the support of the community when we are out there either selling raffle tickets for the Duck Race, Jumble Sales, Spring and Christmas Fairs and other fundraising events.
